SUMMARY:Global Women’s Breakfast hybrid event: Chemistry Teacher Identity as a Catalyst for Sustainability-Driven STEM Education
DESCRIPTION:Place: Chemicum\, University of Helsinki\, A.I Virtasen aukio\, 00560 Helsinki\, hybrid event \nBreakfast from 8.30 am next to the lecture room \nProgramme 9-10 am: \n\nWelcome by Dr. Miia Mäntymäki\nChemistry Teacher Identity as a Catalyst for Sustainability-Driven STEM Education by Dr. Outi Haatainen\n\nChemistry has a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future\, and chemistry teachers are central to engaging young people with the scientific understanding and skills needed for that transition. Teacher identity\, shaped by beliefs\, attitudes\, and professional practices\, guides classroom decisions and influences teachers’ willingness to adopt educational innovations\, including interdisciplinary STEM approaches for sustainability. In this talk\, I will share our findings on fostering chemistry teacher identity and illustrate how non-formal learning laboratories\, such as LUMAlab Gadolin\, function as collaborative communities of practice where pre-service teachers learn to connect pedagogy\, sustainability\, scientific practices\, and current chemistry research in their teaching\, and begin to see themselves as sustainability-oriented chemistry teachers. \nRegister via the link.
