The programme aims to improve student\u2019s knowledge and skills and to strengthen the joy of discovery and learning in\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">STEM<\/span>\u00a0subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Education and Culture has chosen\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0Centre Finland\u2019s proposal as the start of a national development programme to strengthen\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">STEM<\/span>\u00a0skills in children and youth aged 6 to 16 years old. School teachers will also be an important and influential target group in addition to the students.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is scheduled to take place between 2014 and 2019. Initiated by the Minister of Education, Ms.\u00a0<strong>Krista Kiuru<\/strong>, the national quest to improve\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">STEM<\/span>\u00a0skills forms a part of a programme to develop the future of basic education in Finland.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAccording to the latest national and international surveys the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">STEM<\/span>\u00a0skills of Finnish youth are declining. This trend is alarming because mathematical thinking and logical problem solving skills form an essential part of the foundations of learning. It is necessary to take action to improve students\u2019 engagement and joy in learning,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0minister Kiuru emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0Finland programme will find novel and innovative tools and approaches to teaching practices, methods and learning environments. The programme will be based on current research and it aims to provide practical action guidelines that can be employed in schools nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">LUMA<\/span>\u00a0Centre Finland welcomes ideas and suggestions from teachers, students and researchers.
