Participants and teachers from seven countries enjoyed collaborative learning, interaction, workshops and daily lectures. This year\u2019s topic was teacher\u2013researcher collaboration. In traditional Finnish style, the participants had the opportunity to relax in a sauna, barbecue and hike in the forest together. The forum was organised collaboratively by the University of Helsinki\u2019s<a> Academic Outreach Network<\/a> (part of LUMA Centre Finland) and the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual Teachers\u2019 Climate Change Forum brings together teachers from all over the world to learn more about climate change and related research and teaching. First held in 2017, the forum is aimed at all teachers interested in climate education and develops their professional skills through versatile talks and workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Co-design and climate education at Hyyti\u00e4l\u00e4 Forestry Field Station<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The keynote speaker was Professor Ying-Shao Hsu of the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). She focused on co-design, an approach embracing all perspectives and engaging specialists in various fields.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Ying-Shao_cropped-536x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3205\" style=\"width:152px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis type of climate education is fundamental to our country\u2019s mission. Some of our multinational conglomerates collaborate with science educators,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to communicate about climate change, related research and climate education to the general public as well. Ying-Shao Hsu explains that a broad consensus on climate issues is being sought in Taiwan too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An enlightening and enjoyable experience for teachers and future generations<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The feedback regarding the forum has been very positive. Topics of interest to the participants included the use of open data in teaching, collaborative discussion and design, and the enhancement of student motivation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Ilmastosoturit_cropped-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3196\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of general upper secondary school students and staff calling themselves Climate Warriors focus on engaging students as sustainability educators, establishing friendships, promoting a collaborative approach and using social media to resolve climate issues and increase climate awareness. Missing from the photo is the forum\u2019s director and founder, Professor Maija Aksela of the University of Helsinki, who is also Director of LUMA Centre Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/TCCF_croppedwalkinforest-1024x657.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3198\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Hyyti\u00e4l\u00e4, the forum participants explored the wonders of the forest, forestry research and the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Kavely-metsassa_cropped-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3200\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both teachers and younger participants appreciated the sense of community and the chance to learn in nature and exchange ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Opettajat-oppivat-tutkimusasemalla_cropped-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3201\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers and researchers enjoyed a visit to the SMEAR II research station and came away with a wealth of knowledge about forests and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Hiljainen-kavely_cropped-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3202\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the photo, participants are getting ready for a nature walk led by Senior University Lecturer Taina Ruuskanen. Hyyti\u00e4l\u00e4 Forestry Field Station operates under the auspices of the University of Helsinki\u2019s Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The new international, multidisciplinary building visible in the photo was completed last year and nominated for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luma.fi\/en\/files\/2024\/09\/Hyytiala-emotion-in-teaching_cropped-outside-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3203\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Workshops were held outside in a hybrid format, both on site and remotely.
